PHYSICIAN ASSESSMENT SERVICES
Physician Assessment Process
The physician assessment process carried out by CPEP is distinguished by its
comprehensiveness, the focus on specialty and practice type rather
than general medical knowledge, and the breadth of experience gained
in working with physician concerns in a wide range of areas. The
process consists of three major steps:
1)
Personalized Intake: The program staff gathers information from
the physician and the referring organization through verbal discussions
and written materials. This information is used to customize the
Assessment to the physician's practice and to address issues prompting
the referral.
2) Assessment: Assessment tools are individualized from a diverse
range of state-of-the-art modalities in order to retrieve a broad
range of data reflective of the physicians specialty and
practice profile. Structured clinical interviews are
focused on topics related to the referring organizations
concerns as well as clinical presentations typically seen in the
physicians practice. Written testing and simulated patient
encounters are selected to address the physicians specialty.
In addition, the assessment tools include a cognitive function
screening
and, when appropriate, EKG or fetal monitor interpretations. Taken
together, these assessment modalities provide a comprehensive
and
objective picture of the physicians strengths and weaknesses.
3) Assessment Report Compilation: A board-certified physician
serves as an Associate Medical Director for Assessment, and oversees
each assessment. The Associate Medical
Director has primary responsibility for collecting assessment data
and interpreting performance results. Assisted by clinical consultants
in the appropriate medical specialty, the Associate Medical Director
prepares a detailed report of the assessment findings that identifies
areas of strength as well as areas for deficiency within the categories
of medical knowledge, clinical decision-making, documentation skills,
and communication skills. The physicians performance on the
cognitive screen is commented upon, as well as any observed behaviors
or noted health concerns that could impact ability to practice.
