PHYSICIAN EDUCATION

In keeping with the medical model, the Assessment has its greatest value when it is accompanied by the Physician Education Intervention. This innovative program utilizes a personalized approach to physician behavioral change and provides a level of interaction and individualized attention that distinguishes it from traditional approaches to remediation.

The Physician Education Intervention is designed and implemented by a CPEP Associate Medical Director for Education and the CPEP staff in consultation with the participant. Every effort is made to use educational resources within the physician’s home state, enabling her or him to continue normal clinical practice activities while participating in the intervention. The national and regional network of educational resources that CPEP has established over the past decade significantly enhances this capability.

Physician Education Plan Development
Based on the educational needs of the physician as identified by the in-depth Assessment, a written education plan is developed to define specific objectives, activities, time frames, and evaluation methods. The physician education plan varies in duration as well as breadth of activities and follows the Education Intervention’s overall model of community-based education.

Physician Educational Activities
A preceptor is identified and selected within the participant’s area to provide one-on-one educational guidance and support. Preceptor activities allow the participant to work directly with a peer to improve clinical performance, documentation, office practices, and interpersonal skills. The physician may spend from several hours to several days per month with the preceptor. The physician is responsible for maintaining and submitting a log of preceptor/educational activities.

In addition to carrying out the structured physician education plan, the Educational Intervention may be supplemented by more traditional medical education activities including:

  • Mini-Residencies (from one week to several months)
  • Professional reading
  • Home study and self-assessment courses
  • Video-tape, CD-Rom, and internet courses
  • Specialty field updates and clinical courses
  • Communication courses and coaching
  • Documentation courses and coaching

Monitoring and Reporting
The CPEP staff maintains ongoing contact with the physician to monitor activities, track progress made toward meeting the educational objectives, revise or update the plan as necessary, and provide assistance with any potential barriers that may impact its completion. In addition, CPEP will submit quarterly reports of the participant’s progress and compliance— or non-compliance if warranted— to appropriate organizations.
