THE CPEP ADVANTAGE

- Physician Assessment - : - Physician Education Intervention - : - Physician Evaluation -

Few situations within a healthcare organization are as difficult or potentially disruptive as peer disputes. For that reason, the Center for Personalized Education for Physicians (CPEP) was created in 1990 with a single, clear purpose: to provide the in-depth information and educational solutions needed to objectively address physician performance concerns. Although the scope of resources provided by CPEP has expanded considerably since that time, the commitment to the original objective remains unchanged.

In today's environment, competence issues impact everything from quality of care and patient satisfaction to employee morale and public relations. CPEP offers the opportunity for a less adversarial process and, ultimately, a more positive outcome for organizations, physicians, and the community at large.

Through the CPEP program, physicians can demonstrate competence and resolve concerns on the part of the referring organization in those instances where an isolated occurrence or knowledge deficit exists within the context of an otherwise careful and knowledgeable physician’s practice. Conversely, CPEP provides clarity in those situations where the discrete concern being evaluated may be indicative of more global problems.

In either case, decisions are informed and supported by a comprehensive, qualitative, and objective process that can transform a conjectural and adversarial environment into a culture of collaboration. As a result, the potential for changing behavior and patient care patterns in those instances where educational intervention is indicated are increased significantly.

Specifically, the program assists medical organizations and physicians with questions about:

  • Appropriateness of decision-making needed for adequate patient management
  • Timing of response to pertinent patient presentations and clinical data
  • Depth and breadth of clinical knowledge necessary to address patient needs
  • Ability to respond and make appropriate decisions in stressful situations
  • Consistency of care
  • Other issues related to patient care management

In addition, the program can also help evaluate the following situations:

  • Clinical competence of a physician who has been out of practice for an extended period
  • Identification of educational activities needed to enhance physician practice patterns or assist in career transitions
  • Clinical capabilities of a physician with personal health concerns including recovery from disabling illness or injury, neurological concern, or substance abuse
