Improving Inter-Professional Communication

The three-day Improving Inter-Professional Communication: Working Effectively in Medical Teams course is designed for healthcare professionals whose communication and/or behavior has been identified as detrimental to medical team interactions. This course will help participants gain insight and develop strategies and skills to improve communication and collaboration.

COURSE AGENDA

Day One

6:00 – 6:30 pm MT Introduction/Seminar Schedule/Expectations
6:30 – 8:30 pm MT Session 1 – Behavior Profile: Insights into Effective Teaming
Understanding one’s behavior style and the style of team members will assist participants being more aware and more effective in communication with others.
8:30- 9:00 pm MT Review of assignment for tomorrow – Self Contract/Behavioral Style Insights

Day Two

7:30 am MT/ 9:30 am ET Sign In
8:00 – 12:00 pm Session 2 – Behaviors That Undermine Teams
Participants are asked to consider and share why they are participating or have been requested to participate in this seminar and incorporate information from Session 1 and relevant pre-read articles into their “story.”
12:00 – 12:45 pm Lunch
12:45 – 2:15 pm Session 3 – The Role of Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the capacity for recognizing and managing our emotions and the emotional states of others. A high level of self and social awareness is critical to our ability to be effective in our work relationships and in coping with and adapting to environmental demands. This session will explore how having a high Emotional IQ can influence behavior changes for yourself and those around you.
2:15 – 4:00 pm Session 4 – Communicating Effectively within Teams
Barriers to and strategies for communciating effectively are reviewed. Participants are asked to consider their style of communicating in stressful situations and their comfort level and effectiveness in addressing conflict within their team.

4:15 – 5:00 pm Session 5 – Relationship Repair: Making Amends Matters
Following destructive team member interactions it is critical that that follow-up conversations occur in order to rebuild trust, credibility and safety within the team. Scenarios will be reviewed and discussed as way of increasing comfort, sincerity and effectiveness around this critical interpersonal skill.
5:15 – 6:00 pm Session 6 – Review of assignment for tomorrow
Overview of change models and review Self-Contract for Change assignment.

Day Three

8:00 am MT/ 10 am ED Sign In
7:30 am MT/ 9:30 am ET Session 7 – Personal Accountability: Focusing on the “I” in Team
Participants are challenged to become more accountable to the team process and their role by considering what changes they can make and how they might go about improving team communication and outcomes.
9:45 – 10:30 am Session 8 – Resiliency Matters: Stress Management and Self-care
The interplay between how work/life balance and stress affect medical team dynamics will be explored. Participants are asked to rate their resiliency and stress-management strategies and consider how they may improve in these areas and support team members in doing so.
10:30 am Break
10:45 – 12:00 pm Session 9 – Self-Contract Assignment Review
Participant Self-Contracts are reviewed in class.
