Benefits for Participants and Referring Organizations Alike

CPEP’s Clinical Competence Assessment Program offers a variety of benefits to participating clinicians and to the organizations that refer them:

  • Objectivity: CPEP is an independent non-profit organization. Our clinical skills assessments are free of bias, offering fairness to participants and credibility to those who refer them
  • Comprehensiveness: CPEP assessments provide a “deep dive” into participants’ overall clinical knowledge, skills and judgment, as well as their cognitive state when appropriate
  • A path forward: CPEP assessments can provide the basis for an educational plan that addresses opportunities for improvement and a return to safe and confident practice
  • Professionalism: We treat our participants with dignity and respect

With the exception of assessments requiring technical simulation, all CPEP assessments and evaluations are being conducted remotely through CPEP LIVETM videoconference

What You Need to Know

How do I sign up for an assessment?

Starting the process is easy. Simply call our assessment professionals in Denver, CO at 303-577-3232 or in Raleigh, NC at 919-238-6536 to get the ball moving. Alternatively, you may e-mail us at info@cpepdoc.org.

What makes up a clinical competence assessment?

While each assessment is individually tailored to the participant’s specific needs, there is a common structure that applies in most cases.

Most participants will undergo a computerized neuro-cognitive screen that examines basic functions such as memory and reaction time

A key component of the assessment process is a series of structured clinical interviews. Participants are paired with clinicians with the same training, specialty, and scope of practice. This provides insight into the participant’s clinical knowledge, judgment and skill

Most participants will take part in simulated patient encounters that assess his or her communication and documentation skills

Participants who perform procedures (e.g., surgeons, gastroenterologists) may take part in a variety of simulations that assess technical skills

Participants may be asked to interpret EKG tracings or fetal monitoring strips if relevant to their practice

Multiple-choice exams put together by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the National Board of Osteopathic Examiners may be used if appropriate

What is the end result of an assessment?

Once an assessment is complete, the information collected is analyzed by a team that generally consists of five physicians plus other professionals with PhDs or similar advanced degrees. The end result is a detailed report of the assessment findings that describes the participant’s demonstrated strengths as well as opportunities for improvement. The report is confidential, and is shared only with the participant and any other individuals he or she has indicated in a release.

What happens if opportunities for improvement are identified?

If the assessment reveals opportunities for performance improvement, those areas will be noted in the report along with the rationale for those conclusions. If desired, the participant can work with CPEP to develop and implement an educational plan to address those areas. Learn More.
