CPEP Educational Interventions

Addressing Opportunities for Improvement

A Pathway Forward

A CPEP® Educational Intervention is often the logical extension of a competence assessment. If the assessment identifies areas where performance improvement is suggested, the intervention can address those areas – in most cases in the participant’s own community.

Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan

That old adage accurately describes CPEP’s Educational Intervention process. Each Intervention is unique, but generally consists of the following:

  • A detailed, step by step plan to address opportunities for improvement. Each plan is based on the results of the competence assessment.
  • Components of the plan may include:
    • Self-directed study of evidence-based literature
    • Structured, accredited CME activities
    • Supervised Point of Care educational experience
    • Chart reviews with preceptor

Closing the Loop

CPEP’s Educational Interventions are designed to fulfill the requirements of licensing boards or credentialing committees. In some cases, professionals who self-refer for a clinical competence assessment may also engage in an intervention to proactively improve their clinical performance.

CPEP cannot engage in an educational intervention in the absence of a clinical competence assessment conducted by CPEP staff. The plan is separate from the assessment report, and its development is subject to a separate set of fees.

What You Need to Know

If you are a physician, podiatrist, or advanced practice professional who has already completed the CPEP Clinical Competence Assessment process, you may register for an Educational Intervention by calling our Education professionals at 303-577-3232, ext. 208.

The length of an intervention may vary. Plans that address more significant educational needs generally take longer. At the same time, participants who perform well during the intervention may require less time. Most Educational Interventions range from 9 to 18 months, depending upon the circumstances.

CPEP’s Educational Interventions are available to physicians, podiatrists, physician assistants and advanced practice nurses.

Note that these Interventions are only available to clinicians who have completed the CPEP Clinical Competence Assessment process.

This is a supervised educational experience working directly with a preceptor in a clinical setting.  Point of Care (PoC) education occurs during the patient encounter and includes appropriately graduated levels of independence through periods of observation and supervision.  The preceptor provides focused coaching and supervision.

A preceptor is a clinician with the same training, specialty, and scope of practice who serves as a mentor and educator during the educational intervention period.
